Message from the Dean

Welcome to RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS) the newest and largest college at RIT.

the Dean in his office As the first dean of this great College, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you and to tell you about our great successes. We became RIT’s eighth college five years ago, thanks to the generous gift of Mr. B Thomas Golisano, philanthropist and entrepreneur. Without Mr. Golisano’s generosity and President Simone’s vision; we would not be here today. I am proud to tell you that in these past five years, we have worked very hard and have accomplished much. We have gained national recognition as a premiere computing college and remain dedicated to becoming THE computing school of choice. We are passionate about preparing our students for promising and fulfilling careers.

We are committed to our students’ success; not only while we are entrusted with their education but also once they become our ambassadors in the real world. We are focused on preparing our students to become highly skilled—and sought after—computing professionals, and truly there is no better testimony that says we’ve done our job and have done it well than celebrating the success of our graduates. We also continue to refine and enhance our academic portfolio to best meet not only students’ interests but the needs of an ever-evolving industry. To do so, we must remain ahead of the curve—our world-class faculty, dedicated staff and innovative degree options help us get to the very top!

We have completed construction on a new 125,000 sq. ft. building which will be entirely devoted to programs of the college. The Laboratory for Applied Computing occupies a 9,000 sq. ft. building which is devoted to interdisciplinary industry-sponsored research.

GCCIS includes the departments of Computer Science; Information Technology; Networking, Security, and Systems Administration; and Software Engineering; as well as the Laboratory for Applied Computing. This mixture of applied computing disciplines is unique and allows the College to offer a strong, diverse series of programs centered around computing, from the infrastructure designers to the end users’ point of view.

It goes without saying, that in order for any leader to realize success at every level of an organization, we must surround ourselves with only the best and the brightest—I am honored to be in such a position here in the Golisano College and grateful for the continued guidance, support and dedication of our department chairs—Paul Tymann from Computer Science; Jim Leone, Information Technology; Luther Troell, Networking, Security, and Systems Administration; and Fernando Naveda, Software Engineering. Additionally, our work could not even begin to be done without the faculty and staff of the College as well as the management team.

Great things continue to happen here at GCCIS as we work hard to become the computing school of choice! We’ve taken this opportunity to share some highlights and achievements from the past year that our entire community—students, faculty, staff and friends—is most proud of and in many cases, directly responsible for. To wit:

  • Gained national recognition as a leading college of computing (probably the most comprehensive college of its kind)
  • Built world-class facilities
  • Graduated 2,700 Golisano College alumni into careers in computing and information sciences
  • Received ABET accreditation for all of our undergraduate programs
  • Were designated a Center of Academic Excellence from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security
  • Conducted sponsored research through our partnerships with industry; and…
  • Launched several new academic programs, including RIT’s third Ph.D. program, the Ph.D. in Computing and Information Sciences.

This is a remarkable level of achievement in just five short years. More than five years ago, we had a vision to take our computing programs from across the campus and pull them under one roof, literally and figuratively. The Golisano name is well known by the students as they refer to this state-of-the-art facility and the expertise of its faculty. It won’t be long before the entire nation equates first-rate computing with the Golisano College at RIT.

I invite you to take some time and read about some of the great things we’ve accomplished. As always, I welcome your comments and look forward to hearing from you.

Cordially yours,

Jorge L. Díaz-Herrera, Ph.D.
Professor and Dean
