BS New Media Interactive Development

New Media specialists are an exceptional group of contemporary professionals. They must possess deep and far-ranging skills in their fields of concentration along with a broad understanding of the social and economic impact of all cutting-edge new media technologies. They must be consummate problem solvers, with the well-honed ability to teach themselves emerging technologies. And, finally, they must have the knowledge and composure to make informed, timely decisions in an arena of constant urgency and change: a huge challenge!

It is exactly these qualities that we seek to cultivate in all of our New Media Interactive Development students.

Students in the BS in New Media Interactive Development (NMID) gain a solid background in design, programming and computing technologies, and the development of dynamic experiences. NMID students spend their first two years learning essential new media concepts and skills, together with their peers from the other New Media degrees. They gain experience in concept development, digital sound, animation, interactivity, interaction design, programming, digital photography, digital video, multimedia project development, and gaming development.

Around the beginning of the third year, students design a track to focus more directly on Web design and development; games, simulation, and interactive applications; or some other area of emphasis. NMID students complete most of their remaining advanced coursework in the Information Technology Department, where they acquire and hone skills in innovative interactive technologies:

  • Programming in at least two languages
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Creation of new media resources of a variety of forms – image, sound, text, animation, video, 3D, and interactive elements
  • The structure and content of complex interactive media systems
  • Infrastructures critical to the internet, such as connectivity, networks and communication
  • The intersection of technology with creative practices
  • Focus on an advanced track
