Medical Informatics Employment Information
Nature Of Work
The medical informatician is the link between computers and medicine. He/she works collaboratively with medical professionals on computer-related projects and problem solving. A graduate of our program is able to design, implement, and support the software needed in all aspects of health care including medical education and research, disease diagnosis and treatment, patient monitoring and reporting, pharmaceutical studies and drug development. Alternately, he/she can design and maintain medical databases, computer networks, and internet or multimedia applications. In a hospital or other medical facility the graduate provides the computer expertise physicians and other medical professionals need for patient care.

Typical Work Environment
Health care environment, hospitals, clinics, medical research facilities, the pharmaceutical industry, the clinical products industry, and companies that develop and market medical software.

Professional Characteristics
Inquisitive with good interpersonal communications, problem solving and analytical skills. Interested in sciences, health sciences, computer science and information technology in a health care setting.

Salary Range
In recent years, the starting salaries for Medical Informatics / Biomedical Computing graduates have been between $42,000 and $58,000, together with attractive benefit packages. Higher salaries are usually the result of successful co-op experiences.

Future For Employment
Employment prospects are excellent. There is a growing demand for computer professionals in every field and especially in health care. Our graduates possess the strong scientific knowledge base and the computer science or information technology skills necessary to efficiently integrate computer technology in the health care field. Opportunities for advancement are many and they are either in a technical or managerial track. Furthermore, these are not limited to the health care field, but also extend into business and industry where many career opportunities require the computing skills that our graduates possess.
